]]>"On the February day when Kalman Gavriel invited me to his new boutique gallery, The Jerusalem Scribe, I was delighted to see tourists back in Jerusalem’s Old City after a two-year absence.
Pandemic-related travel restrictions since March 2020 devastated Israel’s tourism sector. Many Old City establishments closed. Now this prime tourist spot is bouncing back, with creative arts experiences and wares awaiting visitors."

]]>“My vision is to be something that I don’t see in the Old City. You have the museums, you have the artifacts, you have the Kotel, you have the tefilla, you have Holy Bagel. There’s a huge gap,” says Kalman Gavriel, aka The Jerusalem Scribe. “My store is here to fill that gap, to help direct and inspire people.”
For the past eight years, he has been creating handmade works of Judaic calligraphy and running workshops for groups such as Talit-Birthright and even Christian tourists – everyone finds a bit of spiritual fascination in quilling the Hebrew letters of their name onto parchment.
“It’s an opportunity for self-expression and inspiration through this craft. I love teaching and talking about meaningful things,” Kalman says. “Writing the letters inspires me because it’s full of thought, kavanah [intention] and religious fire.”

]]>“Letters of Light” is an exhibit designed to teach the importance of each Hebrew letter through art, and to highlight the deep and mystical tradition of the letters.
"Walking along the ancient Jerusalem limestone walls of the Jewish Quarter, we often find a history in every crack and crevice, but how often do we find works of art?
Little do people know that in one of the four Sephardic Synagogues tucked away on Beit El Street, there is a place where art and individualism meet religion and history.
Local scribe artist Kalman Gavriel educates locals and tourists on the meaning and history of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet through various works of art at his first solo exhibit “Letters of Light” at one of the four Sephardic Synagogues in the Old City."

]]>"In a small art gallery nestled in Jerusalem’s Old City, Kalman Delmoor works to reconnect the Jewish people to their heritage through art highlighting the intricacies of the Hebrew alphabet.
Delmoor, a professional scribe, gives free weekly workshops teaching an eclectic mix of locals, tourists, and yeshiva students how to draw the Hebrew alphabet, which he says adds an entirely new dimension to the rich world of Judaism. “The idea isn’t to train people to become scribes - it’s to open a new path of creativity,” Delmoor told Arutz Sheva."

]]>The sofer (Jewish scribe) has always been a rather abstract figure. It is perhaps the only role with such religious prestige that necessitates creativity and artistic talent. The sofer’s job is as a copyist and a calligrapher; writing Torah and mezuza scrolls, writing ketubot (marriage contracts) and decorative Jewish verses to adorn the home.
Becoming a sofer is no easy task; one must learn the thousands of intricate rules related to the formation of each individual letter, knowledge usually passed down through an apprenticeship. Different writing styles are passed down through both teachers and subcultures, namely Ashkenazi and Sephardi, meaning that those well-versed in scribal tradition will be able to recognize subtle stylistic differences. While the sofer may be shrouded in mystery, the penultimate law of Judaism’s 613 dictates is that, in fact, all Jewish males should write a Torah scroll in their lifetime.
There is one man, a trained scribe, who strays from the pack..."

Today he works as a sofer stam (scribe) and calligrapher and is part of the Jerusalem Fifth Quarter, an art gallery and artists’ colony located in the Jewish Quarter of the capital’s Old City."
